Macro Space Optimisation

Unlock the sales hiding in your space

MSO is a platform that connects performance, space and range data. Built by space planners to drive more sales.

  • Reduces waste

  • Improves efficiency

How MSO works

Three steps from data to decision. No spreadsheets, no guesswork.

Connect your data

MSO integrates with your existing data sources and brings them into a single trusted view.

Your data is handled automatically and system settings are all securely gathered and stored for you - there is no manual effort required.

Plus you can set the settings to exactly what suits you and your business.

See the picture

With one click, your report is processed in the cloud, ensuring fast, reliable performance. MSO is quick and consistent.

When you create a report, the system automatically pulls together the exact data you need based on your chosen location, date range, and settings.

Category-level dashboards show where space is over or under allocated based on actual trading performance.

Make the decision

Once the report is ready, you can instantly view it on-screen, apply filters, make adjustments, and tailor it to your needs before exporting everything neatly into Excel.

Recommendations are grounded in evidence - unlike traditional processes, MSO uses granular data, not averages of previous performance.

You can analyse space for a single store or estate wide.

Key features

MSO has been built around what we know retailers need from having worked in the role ourselves.

Easy integration

Live connection to EPOS and trading data. 100% web based, can be run on any device with internet access. MSO is quick and consistent: store space analysis and upside financials are produced in 5-6 minutes.

Data guidelines knowledge

Depth of experience in working on space planning and years of knowledge of how products best perform and the guidelines they need to follow, including HFSS compliance.

Space modelling

Model space changes by category, compare scenarios side by side, and see the projected impact before you commit. Space lock lets you fix space to a category or store, or to any other parameter you define, so protected space stays exactly where you want it.

Store clustering

Groups stores by performance, profile, format or region. No more one size fits all - apply projections based on cluster logic to better inform output recommendations actionable at shop or estate level, not necessarily defined by grade or space but also by demographic or category performance.

Range data overlay

MSO combines your space and range data, so you can see how much room each product has and how it performs. Category performance is visible at store, region and estate level, and you can filter by week to exclude anomalies. Outputs are quick to generate and fully adjustable, so you can re-run them to optimise for a different metric blend.

Reporting and exporting

In the live environment MSO has consistently improved performance compared to previously used solutions, using 'what if' analysis and rapid recalculation. You can export recommendations, comparisons and performance summaries that work for board presentation and operational teams alike.

How MSO can help you

Discover how MSO could benefit your business across a range of real-world scenarios.

All the data in one place

The situation

A category review is due by Friday, and the data sits across several spreadsheets. Performance, space and range information are held in different places, which makes it hard to trust the full picture and slow to act on it.

With MSO

MSO brings them together in one view. Planners can model a space change and see the projected impact before committing, with HFSS compliance visible throughout. The result is a recommendation supported by evidence, ready to present with confidence.

What you get

  • Single view of category performance
  • Scenario modelling
  • HFSS compliance visibility
  • Export-ready reports

Confidence in estate-wide changes

The situation

A board meeting is coming up, and the question on the table is where space is really earning its keep. Without a clear view across the estate, answers rely on instinct and the loudest voice in the room. That makes it hard to know where a change would make the biggest difference.

With MSO

MSO shows how space is performing across every store and region, and highlights where reallocation would drive the most value. Recommendations are backed by evidence and ready to present with confidence.

What you get

  • Estate-wide performance view
  • ROI on space changes
  • Board-ready reporting
  • Team productivity tools

Driving commercial results

The situation

A category is asking for more space, and the question is whether the sales will follow. Too often the case for change is built on operational detail alone. That makes it hard to show how space allocation actually affects trading performance, or to justify the investment.

With MSO

MSO connects the two. It shows how space relates to sales, so the commercial case for change is clear, not just the operational one.

What you get

  • Space-to-sales correlation
  • Category investment cases
  • Competitor context
  • Strategic scenario planning

People often ask us

Where does the source data come from?

As part of the initial implementation, we work with your data and information security teams to set up simple but robust scheduled data transfers. These generally happen on a weekly basis, although we can work with any data cadence.

Our system architecture allows us to accept data from a very broad range of sources, including SQL databases, data lakes, space planning systems, ERP systems or even CSV files.

What data do we need to use MSO?

The following datasets are required to run MSO effectively. In some cases, it is possible to synthesise some of the data from alternate sources.

  • Performance: date ID, location code, product code, performance metrics (usually volume, value, profit and waste, but entirely customisable).
  • Macro: location code, category code, bay count, fixture type.
  • Micro: location code, category code, product code, facings, total units, product dimensions, case pack units, merchandising style (unit, case, tray etc.).
  • Locations: location name, location code, cluster attribution.
How long does it take?
  1. Implementation, including data integration and initial training, takes around 6 weeks.
  2. Selecting settings for a report takes 2–5 minutes.
  3. Calculating the report takes between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, depending on the size of the dataset required.
Can MSO handle our category structure?

Yes. MSO works from your hierarchy, whatever shape it is - departments, temperature regimes, double-named levels and all. Nothing needs renaming to fit the tool.

How can we ensure that MSO fits seamlessly into our business?
  1. Performance metrics are entirely custom; you can choose whatever metrics you want to use to drive performance.
  2. The MSO interface has a fully customised dictionary, ensuring that your own business terminology is used throughout; for example, product vs SKU vs article, or category vs commodity group vs department.
What decides the recommendations?

Your own trading data. MSO weighs sales, space and elasticity per category, and every recommendation can be opened up to show exactly how it was calculated.

How does MSO ensure that decisions are appropriate for different types of stores?

MSO runs against specific data for the store being analysed. It also compares this store with others in the same cluster (grade), ensuring that you are always comparing apples with apples.

Can we consider sales trends?

Yes. You can store a percentage sales trend, positive or negative, against each category at any level. This is applied to the historic sales data before calculating space recommendations.
